Those of us who have done a lot of retail
hiring understand that
it comes with its own special challenges. We are generally choosing from a pool of younger less
experienced applicants. Along with the inexperience comes less job
stability and not much to go on in terms of hiring indicators.
Because it is endemic, we sometimes take a fatalistic view of the
high turnover in the retail industry.
That fatalism leads to a “hire almost anyone
and see if they work out” attitude. Our favorite employment test is
a mirror under their nose to see if they are breathing. We use that
method, even though we know it is ineffective, because it is free
and after all they won’t stay long anyway.
Having spent the first 30 years of my working
life in hiring positions in retail I am speaking from personal experience
rather than throwing stones.
You Can Do Better
I used the PASS III pre-employment test,
in retail hiring, for over 6 years. I
have personally
administered hundreds of
them and hired people based on the results. I have seen
firsthand the value
of having additional insight into an applicant’s attitudes before making a
hiring decision. I can also tell you that a person’s
attitudes do accurately predict future behavior and performance.
In my experience, the major value of the PASS
III is in telling you who is most likely to cause you problems. If
you are a retailer you are familiar with old 80/20 rule. (80% of
your sales come from 20% of your SKU’s) In retail hiring it is more
like the 10/90 rule. Ten percent of your employees cause ninety
percent of your problems. If you follow that thinking, it means
by cutting the 10% problem people in half you will reduce your
employee related problems by 45 percent. Now, is that worth $12 a test?
